Voile de la Mariée waterfall at Bocognano

A real nature day among river, forest and waterfall, for a change from the coast.

Nature trip

A cool break in the heart of the island

From Villa Iché-Poggi, the Voile de la Mariée waterfall is an excellent trip inland. The site is especially pleasant in spring, early summer and after heatwaves.

Bocognano and the waterfall: where the mountains answer the sea.

The Voile de la Mariée waterfall is one of the most iconic trips into inland Corsica. Located in Bocognano, about an hour's drive from Ruppione, it offers a welcome cool break during the July and August heatwaves.

The name ("Bridal Veil") comes from the shape of the falls: the water tumbles down the rock faces in several layered veils, like a bridal veil embroidered in stone. During snowmelt — April and May — the sight is particularly impressive.

Access and route from Ruppione.

From Villa Iché-Poggi, take the RN193 towards Corte. Bocognano is about 40 kilometres away, on the road to the Vizzavona pass. The village is known for its chestnut groves and craft market — a good reason to arrive a little early.

The path to the waterfall is waymarked from the village centre. The round trip takes 45 minutes to 1h30 depending on your pace. The ground is suitable for children and, up to the first viewpoints, for people with reduced mobility.

What to bring and when to go.

The waterfall can be visited all season, but the strongest flow is in spring. In summer there is less water, but it stays cool — the chestnut forest around the path keeps a pleasant temperature even in the heat.

Bring closed shoes (the path is sometimes damp), water, and a windproof jacket if you set off early in the shoulder seasons. On the way back you can stop in Bocognano for lunch before driving back to the coast.

This trip combines perfectly with a visit to Corte or the Tavignano gorges for a full day inland.

The village of Bocognano and its chestnut groves

Bocognano is an inland Corsican village known for its exceptional chestnut groves. In autumn the woods are covered in chestnuts, and the chestnut fair (held in December) is one of the most picturesque on the island. In summer, the foliage gives shade and coolness — a real relief from the heat of the coast.

The village has a few guesthouses, a restaurant, a bakery and local craftspeople. You can have a simple lunch there before or after the waterfall: Corsican charcuterie, local cheeses, island wine. It is a way to make your stay at Ruppione richer than just swimming — alternating coast, mountains and inland villages is what gives South Corsica its unique character.

Making a full day of it from Ruppione

Leave the villa around 9 am, arrive in Bocognano around 10:15. Visit the local market if it is the right day. Walk up to the waterfall: 45 min to 1h30 depending on pace and how far you go. Lunch in the village around 1 pm. Return in the afternoon through inland Corsica, perhaps varying the route via Ajaccio and its harbour. Back at Ruppione around 5 pm for a last hour of swimming.

This is the kind of plan that makes a stay memorable: not just the beach, but the beach and the waterfall, the sea and the chestnut trees, the calm of Ruppione and the coolness of the forest. Other inland trips from Ruppione

The Voile de la Mariée waterfall is just one gateway to inland Corsica. Other destinations are within driving distance of Villa Iché-Poggi, letting you alternate days between sea and mountains.

Lake Tolla, above Coti-Chiavari, offers freshwater swimming in a peaceful mountain setting. The scenic road there gives views over the Bay of Ajaccio that few tourists know. You can do the lake and the waterfall on two consecutive days inland, with the sea in between.

Corte and its gorges make the most complete trip: a town steeped in history, the Restonica gorges for hiking, and ice-cold natural pools for swimming. A full day, ideal for the second or third week of a long stay.

On the hottest summer days, these mountain trips become real refuges. The Corsican mountains are 30 to 90 minutes from the coast — one of the great advantages of a stay based in Pietrosella rather than in more isolated resorts.
