Lake Tolla, cool water not far from the sea
Lake Tolla is one of South Corsica's best-kept secrets. Built in 1969 to supply water to the Ajaccio area, it is now a simple, popular spot between mountains and maquis, about 40 minutes' drive from Pietrosella. The water stays cool all season, the shores are wooded, and it is truly peaceful.
From Villa Iché-Poggi at Ruppione, the road to Tolla first crosses the Coti-Chiavari plateau then climbs gradually through the maquis. It is a small mountain road, narrow in places but fine for an ordinary car. The views over the Bay of Ajaccio that open up as you climb are part of the pleasure.

The village of Tolla and the reservoir
Tolla is one of those small inland Corsican villages that have kept their soul. A church, a few granite houses, a plunging view over the lake, and a calm that the tourist season barely touches. The shores of the reservoir can be reached on foot from several points along the road, some of them set up for swimming.
The lake water is especially pleasant in high summer: cooler than the sea, in a completely different setting. For children, freshwater swimming is a change from the beaches and makes the outing more fun. For adults, it is a place to stretch out, read and have lunch by the water.

How to get there from Ruppione
The most pleasant route goes via Coti-Chiavari: you leave the coast, climb towards the pass and enjoy panoramic views over the Bay of Ajaccio before dropping down to the lake. The drive takes 35 to 45 minutes depending on where you start.
On the way, you can stop at the Coti-Chiavari reservoir (site of the former penal colony) for a short walk in the maquis before carrying on to Tolla. You can return by another route, through the forest or along the Prunelli.
When to go and practical tips
The lake is pleasant from April to October, but swimming is best from June. In July and August it is less crowded than the beaches, making it a restful alternative on days when the coast is busy. Bring water, sturdy shoes, a towel and sunscreen — there is some shade, but the sun is strong on the shores.
This trip combines very well with a first beach day at Ruppione, then a day inland at Tolla. It is one of the advantages of staying at the villa: you enjoy the sea without missing out on the mountains.

Activities and swimming at Tolla
Swimming is the main activity at Tolla, but there are also walks around the lake and paths through the surrounding maquis. You can easily spend 2 to 3 hours on the shore without getting bored: picnic, reading, dips, exploring the banks. Children love this place, a complete change from the seaside.
Depending on the season, the lake is also used for trout fishing and by some kayakers. The atmosphere is always calm, without the crowds of the coastal beaches. The winding, scenic road to the lake is an experience in itself: you gradually discover Ruppione from afar, the Bay of Ajaccio, the mountain ridges and villages clinging to the slopes.
The village of Tolla and its surroundings
The village deserves a short visit: a few granite houses, a church, and that atmosphere of an inland village you no longer find on the coast. There are few inhabitants but village life goes on — a bakery, a small grocery and sometimes a local produce market in season.
On the way back, you can drive down to the coast via Coti-Chiavari, a hilltop village with a breathtaking view over the bay, or head straight to the sea via the Prunelli road. Both options take about 40 minutes from Tolla to Ruppione.
Why this place enriches a stay at Ruppione
A 7-day stay at Villa Iché-Poggi can easily include a day at Tolla: morning at Ruppione, afternoon at the lake, back in the evening. This sea-and-mountain combination is what makes a stay in South Corsica so rich — you do not give up the beach, you add the depth of the inland landscape.
