Hikes and day trips around Porticcio, Pietrosella and Ajaccio.

From Ruppione, you quickly go from the beach to Genoese towers, ridges, waterfalls, the villages of the Taravo and the paths of Ajaccio.

Day-trip ideas

A complete selection to alternate beach, heritage and mountains.

From Villa Iché-Poggi, your days can change scenery without becoming complicated. You can stay close to Pietrosella and walk to Isolella, go to Porticcio for an easy outing around a Genoese tower, seek the coolness of a waterfall, or spend a real half day on the paths of Ajaccio. The appeal of the south shore is this variety: sea in the morning, maquis in the afternoon, sunset over the Sanguinaires in the evening.

This page gathers the most useful walks to prepare a stay at Ruppione. Durations are guidelines: in Corsica you often add time for photos, breaks, a swim, and sometimes a road you want to take slowly.

For a short stay, choose a nearby walk such as Isolella or Capitello, then a bigger outing such as the coastal path or the Coscione. For a week, you can alternate: Ruppione beach, an easy hike, a day in Ajaccio, a waterfall or the mountains, then a quieter day. The villa becomes your balance point: you explore, but you always come back to the sea and the terrace.

Close to the villa

Easy outings that fit into your day without upsetting it.

These walks work very well when you want to enjoy Ruppione beach while adding a real activity. They need little planning, still let you return to the villa for lunch or a rest, and quickly give you the feeling of discovering more than just the seaside.

Genoese tower of Isolella in Pietrosella

Isolella tower

Pietrosella · about 1 h return · easy. The Isolella peninsula is one of the most natural outings from Ruppione. The path climbs to the Genoese tower, with the sea on both sides and open views over the bay. A short family walk, but enough to give you the feeling of having gained some height.

It fits well in the morning or late afternoon. You can then carry on to the rocks, go for a swim, or simply head back to the villa without losing the day to driving.

The charm of this outing is its simplicity: you walk among low maquis, pale rocks and turquoise reflections, with the tower always in sight. The light changes quickly on the peninsula, especially as the sun sets over the bay; that is often when the walk is most beautiful.

From the villa, it is the perfect option when you want a real postcard view without organising a big excursion. You keep time for Ruppione beach and add a small piece of coastal heritage to your stay.

Capitello tower near Porticcio

Capitello tower

Porticcio · about 1 h 30 return · easy. This walk links beach, lagoon and Genoese heritage. It suits travellers who want a simple, photogenic outing without committing to a long hike.

The route is interesting because it shows another side of the Gulf of Ajaccio: less wild than Capo di Feno, gentler, with a succession of sand, calm water and historic landmarks.

Capitello tower is a transition between nature and history. You walk by the water, follow the shoreline, then the silhouette of the tower recalls the old system of watchtowers guarding the Corsican coast.

An easy outing to fit into a day in Porticcio: before lunch, a swim or a more urban stroll. It adds substance to your stay without much physical effort.

Hiking landscape between Pietrosella and Bisinao

From Pietrosella to Bisinao

Pietrosella · 1 h 30 to 2 h return · moderate. This hike leaves the beach atmosphere for hillier country, with a village, a stream and a ridge. It needs better shoes than the coastal walks, but is a great option for an active morning.

From Ruppione, it makes sense when you want to discover the nearby hinterland without a big mountain excursion.

The route lets you feel the south shore differently: less about beach bars and coves, closer to old paths, inhabited hills and small valleys running down to the sea. A more discreet Corsica, very pleasant in spring or after the summer heat.

For visitors staying several days, it is a nice break between two beach days. The walk adds depth to your stay while staying very close to the villa.

Coastal path towards Capanella tower

Capanella tower

Porto Pollo · about 3 h return · easy. Longer, this walk follows the coast from Cupabia to Capanella tower. It gives a real sense of escape, with coves, views over the bay and stretches right by the water.

Plan it as a half day, ideally outside the hottest hours. The pace is easy, but the length means bringing water, sun protection and suitable shoes.

The appeal of Capanella is its gentle length: you do not just tick off a tower, you follow a stretch of coast, watching coves, rocks and openings onto the sea go by. The walk becomes a real moment of your holiday, not just a photo stop.

It suits travellers who like to take their time. Plan it early in the morning, when the light is still low, or late in the day once the heat has dropped.

Mountains and cool air

When you want a real change of scenery.

These outings need more planning, but they bring something else to your stay: fresh water, ridges, inland villages, wide open spaces. They help balance a week too focused on the beach, or add depth to a spring or autumn stay.

View from Punta Urghjavari

Punta Urghjavari

Quasquara · 8 km · 4 h return · 600 m climb. The most demanding hike in this selection. It is for walkers used to uphill paths, with a first, partly shaded section then a much more sun-exposed climb to the summit at 1,345 metres.

Head towards Sainte-Marie-Sicché, then Quasquara, up to the place called Sarra Topu at the top of the village. You can park near the Communauté des Communes signs and follow the orange waymarks. The climb is felt from the start: the slope sets the pace for a good hour, with two small streams to cross before leaving the woods.

The landscape then changes completely. You leave the forest for more open views over the peaks, the valley and the villages. At a junction marked by an orange arrow, turn left on a gentle descent. The turn-off to the summit loop is discreet, marked by a cairn: from there, about twenty minutes of unmarked climbing remain.

At the top, the statue of the Virgin Mary, the two crosses and the view over the Gulf of Ajaccio, the Coti-Chiavari bay, Campo, Frassetto and Quasquara make the effort worthwhile. The descent follows the same route and requires concentration: it is tougher than it looks.

Piscia di Carnavalli waterfall near Cauro

Piscia di Carnavalli waterfall

Cauro · 20 min return · easy. Short and accessible, this walk is mainly about the cool atmosphere. It fits well into a day when you want to leave the coast without a big hike. The drive from the south shore already changes the mood: you leave the sea, head inland, and fresh water and greenery take over.

The walk is particularly worthwhile in spring or after a wetter spell. It suits families, people who do not walk much, or anyone wanting a simple nature break before heading back to the beach. Even though the round trip is short, wear proper shoes: the ground can be damp or uneven around the waterfall.

The Coscione plateau in South Corsica

Coscione plateau

Zicavo · about 3 h return · easy depending on route. The Coscione completely changes the atmosphere of your stay: pozzines (peat-bog pools), streams, wide open spaces, free-roaming animals and mountain light. This is no longer beach Corsica but a pastoral, open Corsica, with landscapes that feel far from Ruppione although you are still in the same département.

The outing involves more driving from the villa, so plan it as a full day. Take your time: leave early, check the weather, bring food, then choose a route suited to the group. The pozzines are fragile and animals roam freely; enjoy this excursion calmly, staying on the paths and respecting the pastoral character of the plateau.

Village path between Zigliara and Forciolo

From Zigliara to Forciolo

Taravo · about 3 h 30 return · easy. This village-to-village walk gives a more rural picture of the interior: old houses, stone paths, dense vegetation, clearings and the hills of the Taravo. It is not about instant spectacle; it tells the story of a lived-in Corsica, of paths between hamlets, old walls and views that open up now and then.

From Ruppione, it is a good idea for travellers who want to go beyond the beach-and-Ajaccio duo and better understand the hinterland. The pace is slower, more about heritage, almost contemplative. Choose it when you want to walk without crowds, observe the villages and take a break in a less touristy area.

Walks in Ajaccio

Three ideas linking city, sea and heritage.

Ajaccio is more than a city visit. From the Parata, the Sanguinaires and the hills above the city, you can add real walks to a day in Ajaccio. These outings complement the south-shore hikes well: you see the gulf from a new angle without losing touch with the sea.

Coastal path in Ajaccio towards the Sanguinaires

Coastal path (sentier des douaniers)

Ajaccio · 8.1 km · about 2 h 10 · easy. Start from the Parata car park. The path then follows the coast towards Capo di Feno, with views of the Sanguinaires islands, the maquis and the coves. An accessible walk but very exposed: water, a cap and sun protection are essential.

The best plan is to treat the walk as a half day, keeping time for the Parata or a stop near the Sanguinaires.

View over Ajaccio from the Bois des Anglais

Bois des Anglais and the ridge path

Ajaccio · 4.91 km · about 50 min · easy. This short walk climbs above the city among strawberry trees, holm oaks, olive trees and maquis plants. A breath of nature without a long outing.

It combines very well with a morning in Ajaccio: market, old town, museum or harbour, then a walk before heading back to the quiet of Ruppione.

Parata tower in Ajaccio facing the Sanguinaires islands

Parata tower

Ajaccio · heritage · short stop. The Genoese tower of the Parata overlooks the point facing the Sanguinaires islands. It recalls the defensive role of these 16th-century towers, built to watch the coast and warn of attacks.

A perfect stop to combine with the coastal path or an evening at the Sanguinaires. The appeal is not just the tower: it is the whole site, with its rocks, open sea and late-afternoon light.

The area in pictures

A few photographs of the paths and landscapes of the south shore to show what awaits you: the maquis, the sea seen from above, granite paths and evening light.
